We have been involved in the sport of pure bred dogs since 1981, beginning in a Yorkshire Terrier show kennel - Heskethane/Gayelyn Yorkies. An education that I could never have duplicated began there. It was not long before I knew that I wanted to show and breed standard longhair dachshunds, the breed I grew up with, and in 1983 that dream became a reality. We have been breeding and showing longhair dachshunds under the AMTEKEL kennel prefix since 1985.

Our first show dachshund was Ch. Rose Farms Jerry v Boondox. A beautiful little girl with a lot of character; we acquired Jerry at the age of 3 from Dee Hutchinson, and thank Dee for giving me a start when no one else would! Jerry's 2nd litter produced the DCA's 1989 Best in Show winner - Ch. Amtekel's The Great Gatsby, CD, JE, VC owned by Sidney Stafford. Although Gatsby loved the field, he loved mice more than bunnies and therefore never acquired his Field Championship but was field pointed. He went to the bridge in 2002.

Our dogs are not just pretty, but functional as well, having won many, many awards in a variety of events. Our dachshunds are field trialed (track rabbits), and are tested in their ability to "go to earth" (underground tunnels.) Sometimes the ground is muddy..

DCh. Amtekel's Most Jubilare CD, ME, V.C.

"Jubie was a true earth dog!" (Taken in Crosswicks, NJ just after she received her junior earthdog title. A hurricane the day before left the tunnels flooded, hence the mud.)

We work in obedience, and we have worked in agility too. Agility is not a sport that I (personally) would recommend for my dachshunds. I did have one injured from the repetitive jumping.

Occasionally we have a litter of puppies. We are always happy to refer individuals who are interested in this wonderful breed of dog to other breeders who are members of DCA or to rescue organizations.

I have served as 2nd Vice President of the Dachshund Club of America (1996-1998) and as Secretary of the Dachshund Club of America, Inc., from 1999-2006. Although I no longer hold an office in the club, I remain on the DCA Health committee and am the originator and webmaster for the DCA webpage. My commitment to the health of dogs begins with my own. Locally, I have served as secretary, Vice President and on the board of directors of the now defunct Hudson Valley Dachshund Association, New York. I have also served in various positions for all breed clubs.

I want to see the dogs!....
